Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are gaining popularity as a heating solution for homes, but there are still many misconceptions surrounding their use. In this blog, we will examine some of the most prevalent myths and provide accurate information, allowing you to make an informed decision on whether this technology is suitable for your home.
Myth 1: ASHPs are only suitable for new-build homes
This is not accurate. While ASHPs can be installed in new-build homes, they can also be retrofitted to existing homes, providing an efficient means of heating. They are especially suitable for homes that already have insulation and other energy-saving measures, making it easier for the heat pump to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Myth 2: ASHPs are too expensive to install
The cost of installation can vary, depending on the size of your home and the type of ASHP you choose. However, many people find that the savings they make on their energy bills start to offset the initial installation cost. Additionally, there are financial incentives, such as the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) where the government will pay £7,500 towards the installation of an air source heat pump when upgrading from a boiler.
Myth 3: ASHPs are noisy
Early models of ASHPs were noisy, but modern units are quiet. All ASHPs are designed to operate at low noise levels, ensuring they won't disturb your peace and quiet. Most of the time you can't even tell they are running.
Myth 4: ASHPs are unreliable
ASHPs have improved tenfold in recent years and are now very reliable. With proper maintenance, they can last for many years, providing a reliable source of heat for your home. They are expected to last 20+ years, which is more than any boiler on the market today.
Myth 5: ASHPs are only suitable for mild climates
While ASHPs are less effective in extremely cold climates, they can still provide an efficient means of heating in the UK. They can be a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional heating systems in these areas.
Myth 6: ASHPs cost a lot to run
This is not always the case. While ASHPs require electricity to run, a carefully designed and installed system will be efficient, making the most of available energy. In many cases, the savings made on energy bills offset the cost of running the ASHP. Moreover, ASHPs help to reduce your carbon footprint as they use renewable energy from the air to generate heat.
Myth 7: ASHPs are suitable for all homes
While ASHPs are suitable for most homes, every home is different. If your home is not suitable, you will be informed during the design stage. In some cases, spending more money on insulation and other improvements may make your home suitable for an ASHP.
So…
In conclusion, air source heat pumps can be a highly efficient and cost-effective way to heat your home. However, it is important to ensure that the system is designed and installed carefully to ensure maximum efficiency. By dispelling these common myths, we hope to help you make an informed decision on whether this technology is suitable for your home.
